Literacy Tutoring

The DS ACT Literacy and Education Center is OPEN

Is your reader decoding, or just learning sight words?  Does your reader understand what he or she is reading? Are you frustrated with the quality of instruction your student is getting at school?

We are ready to help! The DS ACT Literacy and Education Center has been established to empower students who have a Down syndrome learning profile.

Applications are now being accepted for one-to-one and small group tutoring at our office in New Britain (a few blocks from the New Britain Bees Stadium) for students aged five through adult.

The Program
Students will be supported with tutoring and parent training.  We will also offer independent evaluations to school districts, provide professional development programming to school staff and training and research opportunities to college-level education students.

After a screening evaluation, students meet once or twice a week for one hour, either one-to-one or two-to-one with a certified special education teacher who has additional training in reading instruction and the Down syndrome profile.  Lessons are tailored to the unique needs of each student.

DS ACT Discount
Normally, the cost for this service with the level of professional credentials and experience we require of our instructors would be between $75 and $150 per hour.

Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to offer services at a base rate of $60 per hour.  DS ACT members receive an additional 50-percent discount for up to three years, reducing the cost to $30 per hour.  Scholarships will be available as funding allows for those in financial need.

Dates and Times
Dates and times are available on the Literacy and Education page of our website.

The first session will be an extended Winter term beginning November 5th and running through the end of May (snow days will be made up in June).  Two four-week summer sessions will be available in July and August of 2019.  The fall term will begin again in September.

Payment
Full payment at the beginning of the semester is appreciated as it reduces our administrative costs; however, we can make arrangements for monthly payment.  Fees can be paid by credit card through our website or by check at our office.

How to Apply
An online application is available on the DS ACT website.  You will need to download  and complete some documentation and upload an electronic copy of your student's IEP.  If you want your student to begin tutoring the week of November 5th, we must have your application completed by October 31st.  2018
